Lake District
History and Drama! - Castlerigg stone circle, Lake District
A dramatic sky over the Castlerigg stone circle. A megalithic tradition existed in Britain from 3300 to 900 BC, during the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Ages. During this time some 1300 stone circles were constructed in the British Isles. I think they couldn't have selected a better location. It is built on a flat plateau which is the raised centre of a natural amphitheatre created by the surrounding fells (hills). From here you can see some of the highest peaks in the Lake District - Helvellyn, Skiddaw, Grasmoor and Blencathra.
