Low Flight - Arctic Tern, Farne Island

Arctic terns are long-lived birds, reaching fifteen to thirty years of age. But the species is under threat. The species reduced population in New England in the late nineteenth-century because of hunting for the millinery trade which is the practice of putting dead birds on women's hats. Exploitation still continues in western Greenland, where the population of the species reduced greatly. However, they are making a comeback, BirdLife International has considered the species to be at lower risk since 1988.
